Problem
Foilmasters were engaged to develop a book cover that required a full coverage foil area, with fine type reversed out title texts. The process requires a large amount of impression and heat to gain the desired coverage on the sheet but in doing so we inadvertently lost any chance of keeping these reversed out areas ‘clean’ from foil fill-in. When this foil is to be overprinted with a 4 colour process, the writing should be white but obviously being filled in by foil it will be silver.
Solution
We applied a silver laminate as a base for overprinting instead of the foil. This metallised laminate was rolled on as a solid on our Autobond laminating machine and then sent to Colorpak for the overprinting process. The process was originally specified as a 4 colour overprint process as the print would fit the reversed out text. To overcome this we applied a double hit opaque white print to resemble the white stock, then proceeding with the remaining 4 colours before returning to Foilmasters for further finishing.
Outcome
As a final result, we actually improved the overall quality of the product if compared with the live previous copy of the product.
We removed any chance of foil edge visibility within the reversed out title areas and provided Colorpak with a perfectly balanced base material to print on.
The client was extremely pleased with the results of this project and it has opened doors to utilise this procedure on future runs. Foilmasters – enhancing your brands.
